Phil Harrison: Why Was God Of War II On PS2, And Not PS3?
With the PS2 now in its last days, we can safely look back and say that, yes, God of War II was the machine's swansong. But it could have been oh so different!
In an interview with 1UP, God of War II man Cory Barlog reveals that, upon first showing the game off to Sony bigwigs Shuhei Yoshida and Phil Harrison, it was met with a mixed reaction. Sure, it looked great, but the first thing Harrison - now with Atari - said was:
Very good, thank you. I just have to ask this, since it seems like the obvious question. Why are we not doing this on PS3?
Because the PS2 needed one last great game, silly!
Godfather II Gets April Release
Now it looks like their main competition will be The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, Madworld and Velvet Assassin.
But what does the executive producer of the game think about all of this? He's so relaxed he oozes quotes about how wonderful his title is.
"The Godfather II is taking the open-world genre in an entirely new direction by combining the furious combat of acting like a mobster, with the strategic gameplay of thinking like a Don," says Hunter Smith, Executive Producer for The Godfather II. "As game makers, when we looked at what lies at the heart of the Godfather universe, we discovered a game focused around organized crime. The Corleones and all the other families schemed and fought to gain access and control of different territories, so that they could control the flow of money in those areas. This underlying battle cloaked secrecy is what The Godfather II and mafia life is all about, and we wanted players to be in control as a Don and make those strategic decisions to lead their families to success."
What If Street Fighter IV Was Built On The Unreal Engine?
The characters would all wear giant shoulder pads! We kid. In reality, they'd be a lot more detailed, with a heavy emphasis on arm veins. And would look a little something like this.
Some forum dwellers over on Game Artisans have taken it upon themselves to run a little competition, see who can come up with the best 3D Street Fighter character render. The results show that it's a fruitless contest, because everyone who even glances at the thread is a winner.
We've posted a couple of the highlights here, but there are plenty more at the link below.

You Are Cordially Invited To Attend The Street Fighter IV Launch Party
Capcom will be taking over the Geffen Contemporary @ Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Thursday night, and if you're reading this, you can go. The doors are being thrown open to all and sundry. All you have to do is send an RSVP to sfeventATcapcomDOTcom, turn up at 8pm on Thursday night and you're in!
Not only will you be able to play Street Fighter IV, but producer Producer Yoshinori Ono will be there to sign stuff, QBert is playing (!) and there'll be all kinds of arts and crafts going on, including custom fitted caps, laser etching and sketches by the crew at Udon.
Who knows, you may even - if you're really lucky - see a one-of-a-kind Street Fighter arcade cabinet designed by the kids at Meat Bun.
Analysis: Wii is the Word, Goodbye PS2
Although it’s well-known Nintendo’s Wii is a hot seller in the US and often produces mad rushes around the holiday season for desperate shoppers, two of the larger publishers—Electronic Arts [ERTS] and THQ [THQI]— have yet to take full advantage of this.
EA's and THQ’s earnings reports—as miserable as they were—shed interesting light on their platform revenue mixes for Q3, which ended December 31.
A look at EA’s mix by platform (below) shows that its revenue stream from Wii (at $172 million) was the lowest of the current-generation of consoles. It’s worth noting how PlayStation 2’s swan song is finally nearing, as EA’s revenues on the system dropped 54 percent year-on-year, $137 million versus $301 million.
While there’s a lot of room for improvement on Wii, it flexed its muscle on the number two and three consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. With US installed bases of 13.8 million and 6.7 million respectively according to NPD Group numbers, 360 and PS3 were home to strong sales of games like Madden NFL 09 and Rock Band 2. EA posted $265 million in revenues for 360 and $217 million for PS3.
EA CEO John Riccitiello declared Wii the “clear leader in this cycle,” (he’s right: the US installed base is now up to 17.5 million) and his company needs “to move further up on the [Wii] charts.” To that extent, Riccitiello revealed an aggressive campaign that focuses mainly on mass market Wii titles such as the MySims franchise. EA hasn’t forgotten leaving out core gamers and announcing EA’s plans to bring its survival horror hit Dead Space to Wii.
Meanwhile, THQ plans a sequel to de Blob, and it will publish a game based on the Disney/Pixar movie, Up,which President/CEO Farrell expects to be down from last year’s Wall-E. THQ’s Q3 Wii take was $63 million, up from $52 million in 2007’s Q3 (see chart below).

Like every publisher, THQ knows Wii is the place to be, but looking at its Q3 revenue mix, 360 was the dominant platform with $91 million in revenues. Saints Row 2 and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 (4 million units shipped) played a big role in driving revenues on both 360 and PS3.
Similar to EA, THQ’s PS2 revenues ($49 million vs. $130 million a year ago) saw a sharp drop, an indication that both have decided it’s time to move on from almost 10-year-old technology.
Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And Damned' Radio Station Details
It's impressive that Rockstar took the time and spent the money to give The Lost and Damned its own unique soundtrack. Acquiring new songs and recording VO for celebrities is not cheap. When you consider that all this effort and money was for downloadable content, it's even more noteworthy.
Any tracks or DJs interest you?
More People Play FIFA Than You Could Possibly Imagine
One thing I've picked up over the years is how oblivious most Americans are to the success of EA's FIFA. It's not your fault, just, it's not a game on most people's radar.
So it's probably news to most Americans that the game is popular. Immensely popular. Like, bigger-than-Madden popular. And how popular is that? Let's take a look at these figures.
For starters, FIFA was EA's biggest-selling game last year (FIFA 09 selling over 7 million copies worldwide). And the year before that. Which means a lot of people play it online. Like, enough for there to be an average of 1.25 million games of FIFA 09 played every day, with 141 million having been played in total since the game's release in September.
Those numbers are crazy numbers. And you know the craziest part? They're deserved, because FIFA 09 was actually a really, really good game (especially the 10v10 online multiplayer).

More Screenshots of Girls in Bikinis Killing Zombies
Okay, I'm not sure if these are actually new, but hidden within D3Publishers' assets for Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad (Xbox 360) and Bikini Zombie Slayers (Wii) were a few screenshots we hadn't posted before. So here you go: more bikinis and zombies.
Developed by Tamsoft and said to be improved over their initial Japanese releases, the bloody bikini-centric budget games should be in North American stores tomorrow.
The Xbox 360 version, Bikini Samurai Squad, is priced at $40, while the Wii edition, dubbed Bikini Zombie Slayers--technically the sequel to Squad--will go for a paltry $30.
Oh, and good luck trying to buy either without some sort of social stigma. I felt slimy just asking Game Crazy if "that Bikini Samurai Squad game" was in. It was that or confusing the clerk with "Onechanbara" and then trying to spell it out. Either way, it's lose-lose.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
This extended look at 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand emphasizes the game's cover system, but thankfully, Swordfish designer Tim Austin closes by explaining: "We didn't really want a game where you're spending all your time hiding behind cover... so there's a lot of point rewards for getting out and getting in the faces of your enemy."
That's what I'm talking about. If I'm playing a 50 Cent game, I don't want to run around daintily dodging bullets and hiding behind potted plants. Cover is for punks.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is scheduled for a Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release on February 24.
THQ to distribute Capcom titles down under

With the announcement of distributor Red Ant's financial troubles just weeks out from the Australian release of Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5, many Aussie gamers were starting to get concerned that a delay was afoot. Red Ant was the local distributor for Capcom and Konami, among others. And though Konami had already announced a new distribution partnership with Atari, there was no word on which company Capcom would rely on to get its games shipped around Australia. Well, fear no more. In a press release put out by Capcom's Europe office, as of this morning THQ Asia Pacific is the official sole distributor for Capcom in Australia and New Zealand, effective immediately.
Under this agreement, THQ's Aussie arm will be responsible for all aspects of distribution, marketing, and sales of Capcom titles in the A&NZ nations.
The first titles to be distributed by THQ will be Street Fighter IV and Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop on the 19th and 26th of February, respectively, and Resident Evil 5 on the 12th of March. MotoGP and Neopets Puzzle Adventure are yet to be dated. Stay tuned for our Street Fighter IV review.
Call of Duty 4 tops BAFTA nominees
Some 15 months after the debut of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, one might think it was done competing for Game of the Year awards. One would be wrong, however, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts today announced the gaming nominees for its (mostly) annual BAFTA awards, and Modern Warfare led all comers with nominations in seven categories, including Best Game.
More proof that Modern Warfare isn't ancient history.
The last BAFTA game awards were doled out in October of 2007, with publishers needing to submit eligible games in completed form by early September. Last year, the British Academy opted to delay the awards (and the submission cutoff), ensuring that games competing on shelves in the same holiday season would also be competing in the same awards season. But along with that delay comes a one-time extra-large pool of candidates, with a 2007 release like Modern Warfare competing against games like Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, which launched in December 2008.
Modern Warfare was by no means the only 2007 game to nab honors, nor the only one to pick up multiple nominations. Assassin's Creed was named in four categories, while Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy each received three nods. As for the representatives of 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV garnered six nominations, Fable II and Little Big Planet scored five each, and Dead Space and Fallout 3 could soon need shelf space for an extra four awards each.
The winners will be announced March 10 in a cermony at the London Hilton on Park Lane. One guaranteed honoree that night is Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who has been confirmed as the recipient of this year's Fellowship accolade.
The full list of categories and nominees follows.

Battlefield Heroes resuming beta operations
Earlier 2009 having arrived, EA DICE said today that it plans to reopen the Battlefield Heroes closed beta test tomorrow, February 11. Those who had previously been involved with the beta test will be able to resume playing the game, and DICE plans to continue inviting players who have signed up through its official Web site.
The developer gave no indication when Battlefield Heroes will enter its open-testing phase. However, EA said during its most recent earnings report that it expects to officially deploy the game during its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009.
A free-to-play game, Battlefield Heroes will earn its keep through microtransactions, the purchase of in-game items for real-world money. As detailed in GameSpot's most recent hands-on with Battlefield Heroes, the game features a robust lineup of character customization options, which play into the game's over-the-top aesthetic. Staying true to the series' roots, the multiplayer-centric game offers a number of vehicles and weapons that players can maim one another with.
Battlefield Heroes is just one of several franchise titles in development at EA DICE. Earlier this month, EA announced that Battlefield: Bad Company 2--a sequel to last year's well-received console shooter--would ship out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in early 2010. This summer, EA will deploy Battlefield 1943, a WWII-set downloadable multiplayer-only shooter available through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, as well as for PCs.
The Best Resident Evil?
by Levi Buchanan
showUSloc=(checkLocale('uk')checkLocale('au'));document.writeln(showUSloc ? 'US, ' : '');
February 10, 2009 - Next month, Capcom resumes scaring gamers with Resident Evil 5, the latest entry in the survival-horror series that helped define a genre. The Resident Evil series turns 13 this year, too, making it a perfect time to ring in a new installment of this storied franchise. Chances are, if you've been gaming for the last decade, you have at least dropped one or two (or 500) zombies infected with Umbrella's sinister T-Virus. We asked readers which of the Resident Evil games was the best. Over 21,000 thousand logged their opinion of the ten options we offered. Here's how the votes break down:
Resident Evil 4: 59%
Resident Evil 2: 17%
Resident Evil: 11%
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis: 5%
Resident Evil: Code Veronica: 4%
Resident Evil Zero: 1%
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles: 1%
Resident Evil Outbreak: 0%
Resident Evil Outbreak 2: 0%
Resident Evil: Dead Aim: 0%It should come as no surprise that Resident Evil 4 topped the list. The 2005 release was a critical and commercial smash, winning a number of awards. What is interesting to see, though, is how the main games in the franchise steamrolled over the off-shoots. The two Outbreak games for the PlayStation 2 cratered in this poll, as did the light gun shooter Dead Aim. True, these game did not necessarily grab the best reviews or the most sales, but it says either Capcom should just concentrate on the main games in the series since fans like them the most or that Capcom needs to pay better attention to the quality of the off-shoot games. Or maybe it's a combination of two. Which game did you vote for? And if you didn't vote, which of the Resident Evil games do you believe deserves the top spot? Nvidia posts $30 million annual loss
Posted Feb 10, 2009 5:12 pm PT
GPU maker takes fiscal-year trouncing, going from $797.6 million profit to sizable shortfall on $3.4 billion in 2008 revenue.
Nvidia is undoubtedly looking to put 2008 behind it and just move on. Reporting on its full fiscal-year results today, the graphics chip maker said revenues for the 12 months ended January 25, 2009, sunk 16 percent to $3.4 billion, down from the $4.1 billion in sales it brought in a year ago. Adding salt to that wound, Nvidia went from a $797.6 million profit for the period a year ago to a $30 million loss for the current fiscal year.
"The environment is clearly difficult and uncertain," said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang in a statement. "Our first priority is to set an operating expense level that balances cash conservation while allowing us to continue to invest in initiatives that are of great importance to the market and in which we believe we have industry leadership. We have initiatives in all areas to reduce operating expenses."
The graphics chip maker took an especially painful walloping during its holiday period. For its fourth quarter of fiscal-year 2009, the publisher saw revenues dip 60 percent to $481.1 million, down from $1.2 billion a year ago. Profits slipped into the red as well, falling from a $256 million gain last year to a $147.7 million loss for the three months ended January 25, 2009.
Nvidia, which supplies the graphics processor for Sony's PlayStation 3, said in December that it would be ramping up its presence on the console scene thanks to partnerships with Electronic Arts, Take-Two, and THQ. As part of the independent deals, all three third-party publishers signed on to include Nvidia's Ageia-powered physics engine in their internally developed titles.

Windows 7 Beta Gaming Compatibility
| Planning to install Windows 7 beta and wondering will your games run on this new OS which is released for testing purpose only? The short answer is, mostly, yes. ExtremeTech spent the last week installing and running through 22 different games, of varying ages, going back as far as Quake II. They also ran some of the newest, hottest titles, including several using the Games for Window logo program, which is supposed to be a sort of "Good Housekeeping" seal for PC games. Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell, and More by March 2010

Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell, and More by March 2010
Altair and Sam Fisher will probably prop up Ubisoft's holiday 2009 season.
By Steve Watts, 01/22/2009Videogaming247 reports that an Ubisoft earnings call today has given clearer release windows for Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction. Both games are slated to release in this fiscal year, which translates to anytime before March 2010. Due to the strength of both franchises, though, Ubisoft is likely to aim for the 2009 holiday season. Several other game releases were mentioned for this window, including a new Ghost Recon game and I Am Alive. The company is also planning for several licensed games based on James Cameron's Avatar, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Arthur and the Invisibles. We'll let you know as soon as we hear more concrete details for the upcoming titles.
> Four new Need For Speed games in development
So what about the last one? According EA marketing vice president Keith Munro, it's a secret.
Since the other three NFS games cover simulation, casual and online angles, Eurogamer is speculating that the fourth title will be more in the vein of classic NFS titles and Burnout, and we're inclined to agree. But still, that's a lot of Need for Speed.
"This isn't about quantity, this is about crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category," said Munro. "We took a consumer-first approach and spoke with the fans about what they would like from their Need for Speed. Player feedback was consistent - create custom simulation and arcade experiences but maintain the franchises' core values of street culture, attitude and beautiful licensed cars."

EA Acquires Game Rights To Bourne Series
EA has acquired the exclusive videogame rights to the works of author Robert Ludlum, and is working with Swedish developer Starbreeze (The Darkness, Chronicles of Riddick) on a Jason Bourne title.
The developer and publisher began working together last February on codename "Project RedLime", which was billed as "an incredibly innovative take on a classic [EA] property".
That will be a second and entirely separate game for EA, Starbreeze told Eurogamer this afternoon, but offered no further information on either project.
Ludlum Entertainment re-acquired the Bourne rights from Sierra Entertainment last year, after the latter produced an uninspiring videogame adaptation in the summer.
Incidentally, the Hollywood films The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum are only loosely based on the books. Ludlum wrote quite a lot of other thrillers before his death in 2001, too.
Starbreeze is currently hard at work on delivering The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena for Atari, which launches here this March.
